March 2006

Services Provided:  Renovation and Addition

Location: Atlanta, GA

Owner: Atlanta Public Schools

Project Description:
The Crawford Long Middle School project consist of the renovation of four existing structures, Gymnasium, Cafeteria and Media Center and the 20,000 square foot addition of a third level to the classroom building for the City of Atlanta Capitol Needs rehabilitation projects in urban Atlanta. The  original structures were constructed in 1951 and the Media Center was built in 1976. As usual with old buildings, there are several existing conditions that CDM had to overcome, i.e. aba 2007ndoned underground utilities, defacing of old brick and mortar, moisture in existing S. O. G. due to vapor barrier not being installed or required in 1951, that enables your ability to core holds and add additional loads to the floor slab during construction. To assure structural strength of the existing structure CDM had to hire additional testing agency and engineering consultants to assist in the evaluation of means and methods to construction to incorporate the new design.

The addition of the third floor, the new design was to construct massive footings and shear walls on the two existing levels to accommodate the addition of the third floor. There was a great deal of excavation that took place to install the footing and shear walls to strengthen an old structure. The project was completed in January 8th 2007 as scheduled and on budget.

Crawford Long Middle School Project is the receipient of the 2007 Urban Design Award of Excellence issued by the Atlanta Urban Commission.

DeKalb Alternative School

a a

Service Provided:  Renovation

Size:  60,000 SF

Location: Stone Mountain, GA

Owner: DeKalb County Board of Education

Project Description:

DeKalb County  Board of Education purchased a 20-year-old shopping center with the intent of converting it into an Alternative School.  The shopping vender was still partially occupied by retail tenants.  The project demanded extreme coordination due to the compressed 16 week schedule and the occupied retail space.  When it was determined that the existing slab would not support the proposed masonry walls, C.D. Moody and the architect proposed the use of Fiberrock instead of CMU.  This allowed C.D. Moody to achieve the schedule, but  produced a substantial cost savings, allowing the Owner to incorporate additional scope into the project.

McNair Cluster Elementary School

img img img

Architect: Vernell Barnes, Architect

Services Provided: Design/Build

Location: Atlanta, GA

Square Footage: 108,849 SF

Owner: DeKalb County Board of Education

Project Description:

The new construction involves two new three-story classroom buildings, one story adminisitration area, science labs, media center, and cafeteria theater area, that are located to the rear of the property. Due to severe slope of the land the three-story structures are virtually invisible from Second Avenue, the front of the school. The exterior of the school is a combination of dry stacked stone and cement board siding. The original building has a membrane roof while the three-story classroom buildings have an attractive asphalt shingle roof. The combination of siding, stacked stone, and asphalt shingles allow for this facility to blend in very nicely with the neighborhood homes. The exterior of the building is further enhanced by the use of a storefront punched window opening. The new school is designed on a residential scale which blends into the neighborhood atmosphere.

The Design/Build project scope involved the demolition of the existing school. The entire facility is new construction.
