Square Footage: 250,00
Location: Orlando, Florida
Owner: Disney Development Company
Architect: Farmer and Barker
Completion Date: 1995
Project Description:
With a very low construction budget, the conversion from a shopping mall to corporate offices for Disney was met with a challenge. In the atrium space, colorful, 3-dimensional forms were developed and juxtaposed to one another to create a playful dynamic collision of form. This, in essence created a "Presence of Absence," or the filtering through of the "old mall." The playful forms were resurrected from the old mall and remanipulated to meet the functional requirements of the Disney Corporate Office. The project was highlighted in the Engineering New-Record (RNR) March 4, 1996, issue.
The imagery was created through the use of drywall and a ceiling system called "Compasso." Both ceilings and walls were curved, twisted, and rotated. Vibrant color was added to this collision of form to reinforce the festive imagery.
One design challenge was how to put offices in the large atrium space, which was over 60,000 square-feet. A sophisticated exposed cable tray and metal ductwork were designed into the project link each of the offices with power/computer/lighting and air conditioning. This became one of the design features that laced the juxtaposed forms together.
Because this project was 250,000 square-feet on one level, a colorful path-finding device was used this project. Color-coded carpet squares were inset into the gray field carpet and used to aid visitors of the building in locating the various departments.
